Park View Education Centre

Since the devastating earthquake hit Haiti, PVEC students have been working hard to raise money for a number of organizations involved in the recovery efforts.

  • Students involved in the Me to We movement at PVEC held a Valentine's Bake Sale to raise money for efforts in Haiti. They delivered $120 to Hands Across the Sea, an educational organization helping schools in Haiti.
  • Guidance Counsellor, Amanda Stuart offered yoga classes to students and staff raising another $694 for Hands Across the Sea.

  • The grade 12 Health and Human Services class raised just over $510 through a cupcake sale, a BBQ, and through straight donations. This money went directly to Habitat for Humanity to fund their work in Haiti.

Grand total: $1789.10

Chester Area Middle School

CAMS raised a total of $852 for Haiti relief. A big thanks to the two grade six homerooms that contributed the bulk of it via an attempt of a 24 hour famine that got interrupted because the power went out that night at the school. Despite the event set back, Grade 6 Marshall and Grade 6 Allen were still able to raise the funds.

Petite Riviere Elementary School

Petite Elementary raised money for Haiti Relief through recycling. The students in the grade combined 3 /4 and 5 /6 classes invited community members to drop off refundable containers at the school where the students sort and count the containers. To date, they have donated $100.00 to the Haiti Relief fund.

Aspotogan Consolidated Elementary School

In late January, grade two students at Aspotogan Consolidated Elementary School started a coin drive to raise funds for the people of Haiti.  Over a two week period, students at ACES brought in spare change from home and the grade two students went from class to class collecting donations.

Shortly after they started, ACES accepted a challenge from other schools in the SSRSB, to raise as many dollars as they had students.  Their total was $645.40!

“We had so many little notes come in with the baggies of change, that told us that many of the students were donating their very own money  from their piggy banks....it was so nice to see!” – Jill Vandertoorn

Bayview Community School Bears for Haiti
Rebecca Campbell, Julia Robar, and Kristen Hopkins, three grade 5 friends at Bayview Community School, wanted to help out the kids in Haiti. Shortly after the Earthquake in Haiti the girls decided to collect teddy bears at their school. Everyone on the news was giving money – but they didn’t have money to give. So, they gave teddy bears they were not using. Posters were put up around school to see if anyone else had any teddy bears they could donate to give to the kids in Haiti to try to do something so they knew the students cared about them.

The school collected over 500 bears. In looking for a way to get the bears to Haiti the school heard about Pam Porodo from the Fairview Inn, and her program that helps women in other countries. She agreed to take the bears to Haiti and the students delivered the bears to her and shared their story.

The students are anxiously awaiting photos of the kids in Haiti with their new furry friends from Nova Scotia.

**Note: Not all schools have completed their fundraising. When their totals are submitted this article will be updated!
